    High-density Skyrmion matter and Neutron Stars

    We examine neutron star properties based on a model of dense matter composed of B=1 skyrmions immersed in a mesonic mean field background. The model realizes spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking non-linearly and incorporates scale-breaking of QCD through a dilaton VEV that also affects the mean fields. Quartic self-interactions among the vector mesons are introduced on grounds of naturalness in the corresponding effective field theory. Within a plausible range of the quartic couplings, the model generates neutron star masses and radii that are consistent with a preponderance of observational constraints, including recent ones that point to the existence of relatively massive neutron stars with mass M 1.7 Msun and radius R (12-14) km. If the existence of neutron stars with such dimensions is confirmed, matter at supra-nuclear density is stiffer than extrapolations of most microscopic models suggest.Comment: 27 pages, 5 figures, AASTeX style; to be published in The Astrophysical Journa

    We study two pion correlations from Skyrmion and antiSkyrmion collision, using the product ansatz and an approximate random grooming method for nucleon projection.     We use a configuration space chiral model in order to evaluate nucleon and delta sigma-terms. Analytic expressions are consistent with chiral counting rules and give rise to expected non-analytic terms in the chiral limit. We obtain the results σN=46\sigma_N=46 MeV and σΔ=32\sigma_{\Delta}=32 MeV, which are very close to values extracted from experiment and produced by other groups.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figure

    Spin textures in slowly rotating Bose-Einstein Condensates

    Slowly rotating spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates are studied through a variational approach based upon lowest Landau level calculus. The author finds that in a gas with ferromagnetic interactions, such as 87^{87}Rb, angular momentum is predominantly carried by clusters of two different types of skyrmion textures in the spin-vector order parameter. Conversely, in a gas with antiferromagnetic interactions, such as 23^{23}Na, angular momentum is carried by π\pi-disclinations in the nematic order parameter which arises from spin fluctuations. For experimentally relevant parameters, the cores of these π\pi-disclinations are ferromagnetic, and can be imaged with polarized light.Comment: 14 pages, 12 low resolution bitmapped figures, RevTeX4.     The Skyrme model predictions for the 27J=3/2{\bf 27}_{J=3/2} mass spectrum and the 273/2{\bf 27}_{3/2}-10ˉ\bar{\bf 10} mass splittings

    The 27J=3/2{\bf 27}_{J=3/2}-plet mass spectrum and the 273/2{\bf 27}_{3/2}-10ˉ\bar{\bf 10} mass splittings are computed in the framework of the minimal SU(3)f_f extended Skyrme model. As functions of the Skyrme charge ee and the SU(3)f_f symmetry breaking parameters the predictions are presented in tabular form. The predicted mass splitting 273/2{\bf 27}_{3/2}-10ˉ\bar{\bf 10} is the smallest among all SU(3)f_f baryonic multiplets.Comment: 4 pages, 2 tables, version to appear in Phys. Rev.

    The unrestricted Skyrme-tensor time-dependent Hartree-Fock and its application to the nuclear response from spherical to triaxial nuclei

    The nuclear time-dependent Hartree-Fock model formulated in the three-dimensional space,based on the full Skyrme energy density functional and complemented with the tensor force,is presented for the first time. Full self-consistency is achieved by the model. The application to the isovector giant dipole resonance is discussed in the linear limit, ranging from spherical nuclei (16O, 120Sn) to systems displaying axial or triaxial deformation (24Mg, 28Si, 178Os, 190W, 238U). Particular attention is paid to the spin-dependent terms from the central sector of the functional, recently included together with the tensor. They turn out to be capable of producing a qualitative change on the strength distribution in this channel. The effect on the deformation properties is also discussed. The quantitative effects on the linear response are small and, overall, the giant dipole energy remains unaffected. Calculations are compared to predictions from the (quasi)-particle random phase approximation and experimental data where available, finding good agreement
